If you’re reading this article, it’s probably because you’re getting near the end of your 4-year college journey and you might be in need of some tips to land yourself a job post-graduation. If not, you’re way ahead of the game and I commend you for your proactiveness!
Searching for a job may seem overwhelming, especially when you consider all the documents you need to have prepared for each job application, but with the proper tools and resources, it can actually be pretty simple and even rewarding to do so.
One of the most important documents you will need is your resume; since it is the first thing employers see when viewing your application, you want to ensure that you present yourself as best as you can on paper. When creating your resume it’s important that the template or style of the resume be appropriate for the type of job that you are applying for. Resumes typically are more simple and straightforward for STEM fields, and even business fields, however if you are seeking employment in a creative field your resume should incorporate some element of creativity to it.

Next, you’ll need a cover letter. Not all jobs require that you turn in a cover letter, since in-person interviews are preferred over reading a cover letter, however knowing how to tailor a cover letter is equally as important for any job search.
When writing a cover letter it is imperative that you not repeat what you have already said on your resume. Instead, you can highlight how your experience and role in a job helped you acquire skills that are transferable to the job you are applying for.

Once your documents are set, you are ready to look for platforms where employers are actively seeking potential employees. As students of Ohio University, you may already be aware of Handshake and LinkedIn. These websites were created for employers to connect directly to college students and college grads. Lastly, once you’ve created your resume, cover letter, and your profile for one of these platforms, be sure that you prepare for your interview. The CLDC on campus has great resources for this such as mock-interviews.
Remember that the job search may take a while, but it’s important to stay motivated and positive that everything will turn out fine.
