As Ohio University students prepare for the start of classes on Monday, and the days of summer slowly come to an end, it is natural to want to grasp tightly onto what’s left of our sunny days. But, when classes begin to pick up, it can be difficult to find the time to travel outside of Athens. Fortunately, Strouds Run State Park offers the perfect daytime getaway from the stress of campus life and is perfect for college students on a budget.

Strouds is located in the midst of the unglaciated Appalachian Plateau, although it has been untouched by the ice sheets for over 12,000 years. Still, the effects of the glaciers can be seen in the deep ravines and stream valleys of the park. Large deposits of glacial outwash like sand and gravel were also deposited along the banks of the lake, creating the expansive sandy beaches seen today.
Just a 10-minute drive from Uptown Athens, Strouds’s Dow Lake cuts right through the Appalachian foothills, presenting a postcard-worthy view. Set up a beach towel and umbrella to lounge back on the 900-foot sandy beach and take in the picturesque scenery, or partake in water sports by renting a paddle board or kayak for the day.
Want the best of both worlds? Rent a pontoon boat by the hour and sit back and relax as the water ripples below you. If water sports aren’t quite your thing, Strouds Run also offers 40 miles of hiking trails. These wooded hills include city preserve lands, Athens Conservancy preserve lands, biking trails and horse trails. Plus, take your trip one step further by setting up camp for the night in one of the many campsites provided by the park.
Whether you’re looking for a few-hour getaway, or want a full weekend away in the woods, Strouds Run is the perfect escape for beach lovers and campers alike!
