It’s mid-October and that means it’s time to start planning your Halloween costume for another night out on the bricks in Athens, Ohio! While it can be overwhelming and costly to narrow down what exactly you want to be this year, there’s plenty of options to look and feel your best and most authentic self this Halloween.
Online, a new trend has emerged to boost one’s confidence and self-esteem during the holiday season, branded as “it-girl” costumes. Basically, an “it-girl” costume is one that is inspired by current trends in fashion, makeup, and pop culture. In the past, costumes inspired by smash-hits like Barbie and Bridgerton have been labeled as such, as well as the classics, such as being a vampire or angel for Halloween.
This fall, here are several “it-girl” costumes to look out for on Halloween:
Midwest Princess
Inspired by the iconic album from Chappell Roan, titled The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, it won’t be a shock to see this costume be the total definition of the “it-girl.” A “Midwest princess” is someone who may be from the Midwest, but also reimagines the stereotypes associated with the region.
Many fans of the singer have helped this concept come to life at Roan’s shows in the past, usually decked out in cowboy hats or tiaras, glitter, the color pink, a pageant sash, and at times when appropriate, camouflage. If you are a Chappell Roan fan and want to mix the aesthetics of Midwest fashion with pageantry, this may be the perfect costume for you then. You could also dress as the singer herself, pulling inspiration from her Instagram or song titles.

Sabrina Carpenter
Another singer who has blown up this year is Sabrina Carpenter, who is a certified “it-girl” in pop music, so I predict many Ohio University students will be paying homage to her this Halloween. Carpenter has amped up her style in the last year, as well as now during the promotion of her newest album, Short n’ Sweet. Currently, she is known for golden blonde locks, platform Brat doll-esque boots and sequin bodysuits.
Honestly, this costume is pretty easy to pull together, as you just need blonde hair (or a blonde wig), platform heels or boots and a sequin dress. You can also dress as references to her most popular songs, such as “Please Please Please” or “Taste,” which both require minimal effort to execute this fall.

Angels
The glamorous aesthetic of being an angel is another costume this Halloween will most likely see a lot of, as it’s simple to pull off and pretty cost-effective. Just purchase a halo, wings and an all-white outfit to make yourself look like you just ascended from the sky above. This costume is also ideal if you’re into makeup, especially if you’re into pastel and blush tones.
You can also add more to this costume by wearing stockings, tights or face gems to make you stand out amongst the crowd. Angels are so “it-girl,” as the aesthetic also begs one to be effortless in their style. More inspiration can be found on Pinterest to complete the look.

Pop culture duos
With so many unexpected, and awesome, collaborations this year, especially in music and movies, many students will probably be the “it-girls” of pop culture. This means duos like Charli XCX and Lorde, or Troye Sivan, Kendrick Lamar and Drake, Elfaba and Glinda from Wicked or the Joker and Harley Quinn.
This kind of costume is perfect to do with a friend or significant other, and will show off your love for pop culture like never before. It can also be interpreted any way you want, as you can reference a specific costume or fashion choice, as well as make the costume an overall aesthetic for your online presence. If you want to be an “it-girl” this Halloween, doing a costume like this will certainly grab others’ attention and solidify yourself as someone who isn’t afraid to make a reference in public.
