Themed parties and why we love them

Here at Variant Magazine, we love an opportunity to dress up and show our style. From date parties to birthdays, these themes are classic and a guaranteed fun time.

1.) Frat wedding

The always-entertaining “frat wedding” is the perfect silly, fun time for college students. It serves as a sneak peak into life post-grad and having a blast at your college friends’ weddings. This theme can be customized to fit the host’s vibe; for example, attendees can dress country, trashy 2000s or classy. Choosing the bride, groom and wedding party can be part of the fun, determined through a vote or competition. Planning can be as simple or as extra as possible and it can definitely be budget friendly! Consider laying out an aisle of wrapping paper for the wedding party to walk down, throwing flower petals (or even better, shooters) and having a microphone for speeches. Craft a playlist of classic wedding reception songs and college classics and be ready to dance the night away!

2.) Rhyme without reason

This theme is great for a date party, making pairs communicate and getting creative to execute the best rhyme. The theme is a great conversation starter for party goers, prompting them to guess everyone’s rhymes and discuss their favorites. The rhymes themselves can have themes, with pairs rhyming movie and TV characters, sports, pop culture icons and more - or pairs can be completely random, connected only by the rhyme. This theme is also low maintenance. If everyone gets to choose their rhyme, outfits can easily be put together with items from your closet!

3.) White lies and red flags

Both white lies and red flags are easy themes that show someone's personality. White and red shirts cost under $10 at Walmart and on Amazon, so they can be easily acquired without regard for time. For this reason, unlike other themes, this one is great for spontaneous parties! What you write on your shirt can express your personality or share a funny story, which makes it easy to bond with other partygoers. You can even ask your friends to choose statements for you if you’re not sure what to write on your shirt. Overall, this theme is super easy, comfortable and fun!

4.) Y2K

Who doesn’t want an opportunity to party like you’re at the MTV Shore House? The 2000s nostalgia is neverending, and the accompanying playlist is sure to have everyone hyped up. Throw on some Ke$ha, Missy Elliot, Rihanna, Pitbull, Timbaland, Black Eyed Peas, Britney Spears and LMFAO classics and unleash your inner Snooki. Make sure anyone with a digital camera brings it fully charged and keep the phones away – unless you have a flip phone lying around.

5.) Ugly prom

Hit your nearest thrift, or Depop, and grab the best, worst outfit you lay your eyes on. Any colorful eyeshadow palettes in your vanity drawer? Bring ‘em out. No “natural makeup” or glowy, bronze looks. Colorful and crazy makeup only to accompany whatever chevron, poofy or other interesting dress you score. Not wearing a dress? Think bright, obnoxious suits or dress shirts… or even a Hawaiian shirt! How you execute the theme is your choice, just get creative. To make it even more “prom” some paper plate award superlatives would tie in perfectly.
